The villages the sea took

Allan writes that after the first half of the eighth century the plain between the North Holland coast and Wieringen was drowned, and also the land where the Zijpe and the Wieringerwaard now lie. After that the town of Gonseind disappeared, where Winkel lies today, and the villages Lager- or Nederdoes, Lammoer, Ter-Dorp, Schulhorn and others.

As a trace he names remains of dikes, roads, streets and walls in the water south of Wieringen, "het meer bezuiden Wieringen", and a churchyard with gravestones and coffins discovered in 1772. Whether each of those villages really existed is not certain. He does not give a fixed number.

Translated from Dutch.
